Let us, therefore, as many as are perfect, be thus minded: and if in anything ye are otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you.
โ Philippians 3:15 KJV
When Jesus Christ manifested as a man, He taught His disciples the need to be perfect, even as their heavenly Father is perfect (Matthew 5:48). This didn’t come to them just as an admonition but as a command.
As with the other Apostles of his time, Apostle Paul understood this command, and his goal as a minister was to present everyone he ministered to perfect in Christ Jesus, as he revealed in Colossians 1:28โ29. Though there were some churches whose members had not attained perfection at the time he wrote to themโlike the Corinthian Church, which he called carnal (1 Corinthians 3:1โ3)โthere were churches that had grown to perfection, like the Church of the Philippians.
When writing to the Philippian Church, he made a statement that not only suggested there were many who had grown to perfection among them but also revealed the mindset they should have. He said: “Let us, therefore, as many as be perfect, be thus minded: and if in anything ye be otherwise minded, God shall reveal even this unto you” (Philippians 3:15 KJV). The statement “as many as be perfect” suggests there were many who were perfect among them. With this known, what mindset did he admonish them to have?
Human nature likes to glory. So, even something good can be a reason for a fall. For example, the devil was created perfect from the beginning (Ezekiel 28:12โ15). However, when his heart became lifted up because of his beauty, he fell (Ezekiel 28:16โ17). The beauty that made the devil fall was not his physical beauty but the beauty of holiness (Psalm 96:9). So, the knowledge of attaining perfection, if one is not careful, can be the reason for one’s fall, like the devil. So, when Apostle Paul wrote to the Philippians, it was necessary to show them the mindset they were to have.
The mindset is that they were to live as though they had not attained perfection, even though they had. Which is why he said of himself, “Not as though I had already attained, either were already perfect” (Philippians 3:12), though he himself had attained perfection. This is a posture of humility.
Prayer Points:
- Let’s thank God for His word today.
- Let’s ask Him to help us take the posture of humility before Him at all times.
