14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
2 Chronicles 7:14 KJV
Today’s call to prayer is a direct invitation to every believer to intercede for others. Just as the word of God exhorts us in 1 Timothy 2:1-3, which says:
2 Therefore I exhort first of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all men, 2 for kings and all who are in authority, that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and reverence. 3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour,
Just as every believer is called to share the truth of the gospel in whatever way they can (Matthew 10:27, Matthew 28:19-20), so too is every believer called to intercede and pray for others, not just themselves.
Prayer moves mountains, and probably many Christians believe this, but the problem is, if the focus is only on ourselves, then how different are we from unbelievers who think only of themselves? Jesus intercedes for us in heaven (Hebrews 7:25), and the bible says (1 John 4:17), as Jesus is, so we are in this world, which means we ought to be interceding as well.
In fact, Jesus assures us that when we trust God and seek His kingdom first, He takes care of our own needs, and many of our personal needs would be answered even without a prayer (Matthew 6:31-34). One of the ways we seek His Kingdom is by interceding for others, especially their salvation and maturity in the faith. Adam was busy working in the garden when God saw his need for a helpmate and created Eve for him. Likewise, as we focus more on intercession than our own needs in prayers, God also remembers our needs, after all, for Him it is already a duty as our Father.
There are numerous things to pray for, for others, but the most important thing is their salvation and spiritual growth, since it opens doors to everything else for them, especially eternal life.
Another important thing for us to be reminded of is that God indeed hears and answers our prayers for others. It has a role to play. Jesus prayed for Peter’s preservation (Luke 22:31-34), and the Apostle Paul prayed earnestly for the Galatians (Galatians 4:19).
Prayer Point:
- Let’s thank God for His word today.
- Let’s pray that God will help every one of us to grow in our intercession for all men and for leaders.
