When reading the Gospel of John, it’s striking how John emphasizes God’s love for him, almost as if Jesus didn’t love the other disciples. Of course, Jesus loved them all, but John seemed especially conscious of that love. Could it be that God made His love more manifest to John than to the others?
God loves all His creatures, but to some, He gives a special revelation of His love. In other words, He makes His love more evident to them. After giving His disciples instructions about the New Covenant, Jesus said: “Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them” (John 14:21 NIV). From this, we see that those who experience this deeper dimension of God’s love are the ones who show their love for Him through obedience. And the way God expresses that love is by revealing Himself to them.
Some years ago, the Lord and two angels visited me, and He told me, “There are people I love; I show them all I create.” When we love God by obeying His commands, He demonstrates His love by revealing more of Himself and His works to us. I believe John received this dimension of love more than the other disciples, and God made him aware of it.
Like John, we can also experience this expression of His love when we keep His command. And His command is “… Love each other as I have loved you” (John 15:12 NIV). Likewise, when we obey the voice of the Holy Spirit, we are proving our love for Him.
