But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: โ€œGod opposes the proud but shows favor to the humble.โ€

James 4:6 NIV

Have you ever wondered how sin entered creation? In the creative process of God, recorded in the book of Genesis, we repeatedly see the phrase, “And God saw that it was good” (Genesis 1:4, 10, 12, 18, 21, 25, 31). This shows that all that proceeds from God is good, for He Himself is good (Psalm 119:68). So, how did something as evil as sin come into creation?

In Ezekielโ€™s account of the judgment of the devil (Ezekiel 28), we discover that he did not begin as evil. The being who later became the devil is described as perfect in all his ways (Ezekiel 28:12, 15). The Hebrew word translated perfectโ€”tรขmรฎym (H8549)โ€”is the same word used to describe Noah (Genesis 6:9). This means that Lucifer, who later became the devil, was originally upright in character, just like Noah. He was blameless.

However, scripture records that he became proud because of his beauty (Ezekiel 28:17). This beauty does not merely refer to physical appearance but symbolizes holiness. That is why the psalmist says, “O worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness; fear before him, all the earth” (Psalm 96:9 KJV). The devil fell into the sin of self-righteousness, which is the sin of pride before God, when he turned his gaze from God to himself.

His desire to be like God was not wrong in itself, for we reflect Godโ€™s image when we walk in love, and love is Godโ€™s very nature. What was wrong was the method he chose. In Isaiah 14:13โ€“15, he repeats “I will” five times, revealing his attempt to attain Godโ€™s glory by self-effort rather than dependence on God.

Thus, sin entered creation through a creature who sought to manifest Godโ€™s glory in his own strength. So, when we attempt to manifest righteousness by our strength, we are following the footsteps of the devil and are resisted by God.
