But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, andย became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: (Php 2:7-9 KJV)

Mankind was created by God to be one with Him, and to live and operate from the same dimension as God the Father (Ps. 82:6). Though manโ€™s body/flesh exist in the physical world, by his spirit, He was made to be in heaven with God (Eph.2:6). Therefore, man was made to exist in two dimensions simultaneously. However, the spirit of man was separated from God when He sinned, which is spiritual death (Gen. 2:17). Because of the fall, man became earthly and lost heavenโ€™s perspective of things.

Man was not the first of Godโ€™s creatures who experienced such descent. Lucifer, one of Godโ€™s highest-ranking angels was the first to be judged in this manner. Ezekiel 28: 11 โ€“ 28 recounts the sin of Lucifer and the judgment he received. Luciferโ€™s response after his fall from heaven (the mount of God) to earth is very important to note. He did seek to be restored to the mount he fell from but decided to do it in a way that God did not permit. This was what was recorded in Isaiah 14: 12 -15, when he repeated โ€œI will, I willโ€ in his bid to ascend back to the position he fell from. Because Lucifer did not trust in God, but depended on his ability and might in rebellion against God, He was further demoted and descended to hell (Isaiah 14:15). Therefore, Lucifer fell from heaven to earth, and from earth to hell.

When man fell due to sin, God planned a restoration for him. Because man didnโ€™t have a good example to follow, as Lucifer did not demonstrate that, God had to come down in Jesus Christ, to model a pattern for that restoration. Jesus Christ did not fall from heaven’s realm to earth because of sin, rather, He willingly left His glory and came down to earth by taking the form of a man (Phil. 2:7). His purpose was to teach man how to ascend back to heaven, the original location of the human spirit. In one of His sermons on earth, He introduced Himself as the Way; the way that leads back to the Father (heaven).ย ย

The life that Jesus Christ modeled for humanity was one of obedience to God. While on earth, the things He did or say were things that the Father instructed (John 5:19). Being in every form God, He had more reasons to disobey the instructions of the Father than any of the Fatherโ€™s creatures, but He chose the path of humility by obeying the voice of God (Php 2:7-9). His obedience to the Father led him to the wilderness to be tempted by the devil (Matt. 4:1), it made Him fulfil a ministry that attracted a lot of persecution (Matt. 10:25), and made Him accept a death that was both shameful and painful (Php 2:7-9).). Again, that obedience led Him to hell, which is a place for the rebellious and sinful (Matt 13:41-42). However, the result of His complete obedience was a restoration to where He came from (Acts 1:9-12), the restoration of the glory He left before coming to earth (John 17:5), and ascension to the throne of the Father, whom He is one with (Rev.3:21 ).

The pathway to restoration as modeled by our Lord Jesus Christ is humility that is expressed in being obedient to Him (Php 2:7-9). That obedience starts when we gave our lives to Him by believing in His works and accepting Him as Lord and saviour (Rom. 10:10), but this is not the end of it. After this, we are also to pattern our lives after Him by being obedient to all the Father says to us. This is how we are restored to Godโ€™s original plan for us.

Prayer Point:

Letโ€™s thank Him for His word today. Let us also ask Him to help every believer to live a life of humility that is expressed in being obedient to Him.

God bless you all.
