Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor. 10. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, For he has no one to help him up.
Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 NKJV
The importance of unity in churches, organisations, communities, and especially within the family cannot be overemphasised. It is a spiritual principle that holds great power, and one that we should frequently lift up in prayer, no matter our position or capacity.
From the beginning, Scripture emphasises the strength that lies in unity. In Genesis 11:6, during the building of the Tower of Babel, God Himself acknowledged the power of a united people:
The Lord said, โIf as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.
Even though their goal was misguided, the principle remains that their unity made anything possible. This truth is so potent that even the enemy understands it and tries to sow division wherever God seeks to establish oneness.
In marriage, unity is not optional; it is essential. Amos 3:3 poses a powerful question:
Can two walk together, unless they are agreed?
True agreement, unity of heart, purpose, and spirit, strengthens relationships and creates a bond that resists division. Deuteronomy 32:30 also illustrates the multiplying effect of unity:
One can chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight.
This is the supernatural power of unity in action. Therefore, we declare that every family shall be united in Christ, in Jesus’ name.
Individually, we can accomplish much. But corporately, when we are united in spirit and purpose, we can achieve far more. Ecclesiastes 4:9โ12 reminds us:
Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor… A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.
In the church, unity is not just beneficial; it is vital. Without it, we cannot stand against the attacks of the enemy. Jesus Himself prayed for unity among believers in John 17:21
That they all may be one, as You, Father, are in Me, and I in You; that they also may be one in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me.
When the Church is divided, it loses its testimony. We need all members building together, not some upholding while others tear down.
The Holy Spirit thrives not in rivalry or strife but in love and unity. Where there is division, the Spirit is grieved. But where there is unity, God commands His blessing. As Psalm 133:1โ3 beautifully declares:
Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity.. for there the Lord commanded the blessing life forevermore.
Unity breeds love, and love leads to forgiveness, peace, and power. Let us, therefore, strive for unity in every area of our lives, praying continually that the body of Christ will be united in truth, in love, and in purpose.
May the Spirit of unity rest upon us all, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
