But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.ย Acts 1:8 KJV

Reading through the old and the new testaments, we find the Holy Spirit coming upon people and empowering them for specific work. However, in Acts 1:8, when Jesus Christ was announcing the coming of a new dimension of the spirit, He said the effect of the coming of this dimension of the Holy Spirit will make the disciples to be His witnesses.

The word witness is something to be considered carefully for us to understand the purpose of the Holy Spirit that came upon the disciples on Pentecost day, and indeed all who have received the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The word witness, which was translated from the Greek word “Martus”, can be defined in two ways: “a person who sees an event, typically a crime or accident, take place”, or “evidence; proof”. Therefore, the coming of the dimension of the Holy Spirit Jesus promised in Acts 1:18 is to help the believers to be evidence or proof of Christ and His claims.

What does it mean for us to be evidence or proof of Christ? We are evidence of Christ when we are like Him. The transformation principle is based on the truth that when you see Jesus, you become like Him (1Cor. 3:18). Which means, the evidence or the witness that we have seen Him is when we are like Him. This is the litmus test to know those who have seen Jesus, and it is what the Holy Spirit came to perform on the disciples when He came on them in Acts 2. Consequently, His coming is beyond employment for us to do a task, but for us to become like Him.

Beyond what we say, the life we live testifies the most about our association with Christ. Our witness about Him becomes stronger when what we say of Him is reflected in our lives. Praying in tongues, which was the first thing the disciples manifested when they received Jesus, helps us to become like Christ when we practice it for a long time and often.

Prayer Point:

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help us pray in tongues for a long time so we can be effective as His witnesses on earth.
