โ€œAbraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death.โ€
โ€” Hebrews 11:19 (NIV)

Throughout Scripture, we see that God consistently requires obedience from men. Some obeyed, while others did not. For those who obeyed, there were certain things they understood about God that empowered their faith and gave them the ability to obey. Gaining this same understanding will give us the power to obey God as well.

When God tested Abraham by asking him to sacrifice Isaac, Abraham responded immediately in obedience. This radical act was the result of a deep knowledge of God that he carried. The writer of Hebrews revealed this understanding when he said, โ€œAbraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead…โ€ (Hebrews 11:19). Abraham had already witnessed his own body, once considered dead, come back to life by Godโ€™s power. He believed the same could happen with Isaac.

Many people hesitate to obey God because they fear what they might lose. But knowing that God can restoreโ€”even bring back to lifeโ€”whatever we lose for His sake, empowers us to walk in obedience.

Another powerful truth that enables obedience is this: the reward for suffering for Christ far outweighs anything the world can offer. This is what Moses understood. Itโ€™s why he chose to suffer with Godโ€™s people rather than enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin. As Hebrews 11:25 notes, โ€œHe chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the fleeting pleasures of sin.โ€ Romans 8:17 also reminds us, โ€œIf we suffer with Him, we will also be glorified with Him.โ€ That glory surpasses anything this world can give.

We also need to understand that Godโ€™s judgment is far more consequential than anything man can do to us. Many disobey out of fear of people. But Jesus said:
โ€œDo not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear Him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear Him.โ€ (Luke 12:4โ€“5 NIV)

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego understood the weight of Godโ€™s judgment. Thatโ€™s why they chose to be thrown into the fiery furnace rather than disobey God. When we truly grasp the gravity of Godโ€™s judgment, we are encouraged to stay obedient.

As we imitate the faith of those who obeyed, we too will be empowered to walk in obedience to God.
