 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” Genesis 1:26 NKJV

When God set out to create man, it was His intention to create His replica on earth. This was revealed when He said ‘let us make man in our Own image, according to Our likeness … (Gen 1:26)’. By using the words ‘Image and Likeness’, God was indicating that man will be given the ability to look, act, and function like God. For as God rules in heaven, man was to rule on earth

Studying carefully Genesis 1&2, we will notice that there seem to be two creation accounts. For example, man was the last to be created in Genesis 1, but was first to be formed in Genesis 2. The reason is that the creation account in Genesis 1 all happened in God (in Himself), while Genesis 2 contains the account of how things manifested in the natural. Now, though Genesis 1 Adam was created in the image and likeness of God, Genesis 2 man had not attained to the fullness of the likeness of God before his fall. For God’s likeness were placed in certain trees in the Garden, and he (Adam) had not accessed them.

Just like the first creation, the new creation started in the Spirit before the physical. By the death and resurrection of the Lord Jesus, our spirits have been recreated and look exactly like Christ. However, man is a Spirit, Soul, and Body (1Thes. 5:23). For the life of Christ which has been perfected in our spirit to be made manifest in the natural, there is a process the Lord takes us through. The process involves the education of the mind which is located in the soul, and the subjecting of the flesh. When the mind is renewed and the flesh is subjected, then that which has been perfected in our Spirit will be seen in our flesh.

This process is called the formation or the transformation process (Gal. 4:19, Rom. 12:2), where His image is formed in us, and it happens when we spend time in the word and prayer (In intimacy ). The testing of the extent of our transformation is done by the trials of life we experience (James 1:2-4). As we overcome each, we are given grace to manifest various attributes of Christ

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help us imitate the gentle and lowly heart of Jesus Christ.
