Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.โ€ ย  ย Luke 6:38 NIV
Giving as an act is something God has been leading men to do. We read about Cain and Abel, who offered sacrifices to God (Genesis 4:3-5). Similarly, Noah was instructed to make sacrifices shortly after the flood (Genesis 8:20-21). Abraham and Jacob also gave as inspired by God (Genesis 14:20, 28:20-22), and through Moses, laws were given to the nation of Israel on various forms of giving (Deuteronomy 14:28-29, 26:12-15).
We see that giving in different forms has been part of worshiping God. When Jesus manifested as a man, He taught His disciples not just to give, but how to give selflessly (Matthew 6:1-4). In His interaction with the rich man who asked Him what he needed to do to inherit eternal life, Jesus Christ revealed how the love for money can affect one’s willingness to follow the Lord (Matthew 19:16-22, Mark 10:17-22). Furthermore, what we are entrusted with in God’s kingdom is determined by how faithful we have been with money (Luke 16:11).
Despite the importance of giving, the devil has succeeded in making some Christians critical towards this aspect of our relationship with God.
In light of this, it is good to know the rewards of giving, which will encourage us to give.
First, Jesus Christ said, “Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you” (Luke 6:38 NIV). This means that when we give, God causes others to give to us.
Secondly, giving purifies our hearts and minds. When Jesus addressed the Pharisees, He told them that they focused on outward cleanliness but neglected their inward uncleanness (Luke 11:39-41). Jesus’ solution was to give to the poor, saying, “So clean the inside by giving gifts to the poor, and you will be clean all over” (Luke 11:41).
Lastly, giving gives us access to all of God’s grace. Apostle Paul encouraged the Corinthian church to give, saying:
So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, that you, always having all sufficiency in all things, may have an abundance for every good work” (2 Corinthians 9:7-8 NKJV).
When we give joyfully, without seeking recognition or praise from others, God rewards us bountifully. May we give with this consciousness from today onward.
Prayer Points:
Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help us give joyfully without seeking to be seen or recognised by men.
