Title: The right way

2nd Samuel 6:7 – And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Uzzah, and God struck him down there because of his error, and he died there beside the ark of God.
The story of God striking Uzzah for stretching forth his hand to touch the Ark of the covenant is one of the most, perhaps, confusing stories in the Bible. The man had good intentions, undoubtedly, however, God did kill him. As I learnt and meditated on the story yesterday, I gained three key lessons I will be glad to share in today’s Call to Prayer.
First, the Ark of the Covenant was carried in the wrong way (1st Chronicles 13:7). The Israelites who were supposed to know better ended up copying how the Philistines carried the Ark. In (Exodus 25:14-15), God gave clear instructions as to how the Ark of God should be carried. However, in a moment of ecstasy, the Israelites carried the Ark wrongly. If it was carried the right way, it would not have tipped over. God’s instructions are clear. God wants the best for Himself that is why He requested golden poles to be used and the Ark should be carried, not touched, by Levites who have consecrated themselves. Now the question is, how clean was Uzzah when he wanted to touch the Ark?
The second lesson is that, man cannot help God. The first mistake definitely led to the second one; the Ark seemed like it was falling. However, is God not powerful enough to hold up the Ark in which he dwells or which symbolizes Him. Between God and Uzzah, who has the power and capability to prevent the Ark from falling? God allowed the near fall to happen to teach them a lesson that His instructions are clear and should be obeyed. Uzzah had good intentions as we believe but in that circumstance God did not need his help.
Finally, fear can make you forfeit your blessings. The Bible says the incident made David afraid and he did not want to bring the Ark to his house (1st Chronicles 13:12). Initially he became angry that God had struck Uzzah. However, he did not realize that the fault was theirs. God does not hurt without cause. I can boldly claim that God is a loving God and His intentions are not to harm. Whenever harm comes from God it is because man is wrong. God blessed the house of Obed-Edom, a man who was not afraid to accept God into His house (1st Chronicles 13:14). No blessings can occur outside the presence of God. Later, when David realized God blessed Obed-Edom, he brought the Ark back to his city.
Beloved, God does not act anyhow and without cause. Let’s endeavour to do things the right way, and God will release His blessings upon us. May God bless you.
