Title: The Signs of His Coming and the End of the World

And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?. Matt. 24:3 KJV

In my last contribution to the Call to Prayer, I spoke about the predictive power of the word of God, where I mentioned that the future was framed by the word of God and therefore can be predicted by it. An important event of the future we expect as Christians is the return of our Lord from heaven when He comes to pick His Church (1 Thess. 4:16-17)”. By the word of God, we can discern (predict) the period this will happen.

The end of the world does not necessarily mean the end of life on earth as it may suggest, but a period of the occurrence of certain events, culminating in the revelation (appearing) of Christ from Heaven, marking an end to the world systems as we know it. The period that these events will occur is called the end time. Scripturally, this period (The end time) is what can be predicted, not the exact day and hour, as God has placed this under His power only (Matt. 24:36).

In discourse between Jesus Christ and the disciples, He revealed an event that will indicate an entrant to the end time, which is “the Gospel of the Kingdom spreading to every nation “(Matt. 24:14). The word “nations” is used in Matt. 24:14 is from the Greek word ethnos, which means “a group of people marked by a shared characteristic or traits”. This goes beyond a geographical description but includes nations like sports, science etc. Therefore, where Jesus Christ will be revealed as Lord by the preaching of the Gospel of the Kingdom to every “ethnos” known to man before we enter the period of the end time.

Another sign that will indicate an entrant to the end time is the revelation of the man of sin and the great falling away (2 Thess. 2:3). The man of sin is an individual who will represent the opinion of sin in the world. The Bible revealed that his coming will be after the coming of Satan, with every deceptive wonder (2 Thess. 2:9). He will lift himself above all that is worshipped and his activities will lead to the falling away of many from the faith. Though his activities will be against God, the Bible acknowledge that the delusion was sent by God because of those who refused to believe the Truth (2 Thess. 2:11). Again, though the spirit behind his operation is already at work (2 Thess. 2:7), his manifestation as a man will be after the Gospel of the Kingdom has reached all nations, because then everyone will have been given the opportunity to consider the Gospel. When the identity of the man of sin is known to the Church, then the day of His appearing will come (2 Thess. 2:3).

The last sign that will suggest an entrant to the period of His appearing is the coming of Israel as a nation to the faith. Though this seems to be linked to the first sign given, as Israel is a nation too, and from Roman 11:11,15, we can understand that their hardening and refusal to accept the gospel was intentional by God and is His strategy for the gentiles to come to the kingdom (please read the whole of Romans 11). When the number of the gentiles assigned by God for salvation is saved, then grace will be given to Israel for salvation, which will mark an end to soul winning. Apostle Paul speaking about their coming in said “For if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead? (Rom. 11:15)”. The statement “life from the dead” suggests the rapture as the scriptures say “For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first… (1 Thess. 4:16-17)”. Therefore, the coming of Israel as a nation to the faith will usher in the rapture.

As we watch and see the fulfillment of these signs, we should know that the end time (the period of His appearing) has come.
