The Training of Sons

Call To Prayer
Title: The Training of Sons

If you endure chastening, God deals with you as with sons; for what son is there whom a father does not chasten?
(Hebrews 12:7 NKJV)
The word “chastening” as used in our opening verse was translated from the Greek word “Paideia”, and it means “tutorage, that is, education or training; by implication, disciplinary correction”. As our Father, God trains us so we can share in His righteousness.
There are several levels to the training God takes us through as His children. Firstly, He educates us by giving us knowledge of His word. This is seen in the increased desire for His word, especially when we first come to Christ. As Apostle Peter said, “As newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby” (1 Peter 2:2). The desire for milk is natural for babies.
The second level of this training is the practice of the word. This occurs when God puts us in situations that demand us to apply the knowledge we have gained over time. For example, you might have learned from the word that we are to forgive those who hurt us. Many times, the Lord will allow people to offend us, just to see how we will react: yield to the word and forgive, or act in the flesh and be offended. What we do in such situations determines the level of our spiritual maturity.
Thirdly, there are disciplinary corrections and rewards based on how we act in certain situations. Though the Lord has delivered us from the law of sin and death (Romans 8:2), there are still consequences for sin in the new covenant. However, what we endure as consequences for our actions in the New Covenant is not meant to cause eternal death but to help us recognize an action as wrong and learn to fear the Lord. God also rewards good acts, encouraging us to continue in them.
Only those who have been disciplined by God are the approved sons of God (Hebrews 12:8). This process may seem hard to bear, but remembering that we will share in His glory will empower us to share in His suffering (Romans 8:17). For though Jesus Christ was sinless, He learned obedience through the things He suffered (Hebrews 5:8).
Prayer Point:
Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help us receive His chastening.
