And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death: death on a cross. For this reason also God highly exalted Him, and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name,ย ย Philippians 2:8โญ-โฌ9 NASB2020ย
Some time ago, the lord asked me, how do you determine the spiritual maturity of an individual? What came to my heart was “humility”. Humility is a virtue that is a judge of how much progress we have made in the faith.
When Jesus Christ walked this earth, they were two things He specially asked us to learn from Him: His gentleness (or meekness) and humility (Matt. 11:29). According to Oxford Languages Dictionary, humility is the quality of having a modest or low view of one’s importance. This was what the life of Jesus Christ revealed and a means by which He attained the exaltation (Phil.2:8-9).
God’s statement at the beginning of creation revealed that His intent was for us to be in His image and according to His likeness (Gen. 1:26). Jesus Christ being the the expressed image of His person (Heb. 1:3), suggests that God created us to be like Christ. However, mankind picked up another nature which was contrary to the nature of Christ when he sinned at the beginning. This nature man picked up was the nature of the devil, and the end result was summed by this statement “... every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time (Gen. 6:5)”.
Despite at salvation our spirit is saved, there’s need for our minds to be renewed and our flesh subjected for us to fully reflect the humble nature of God in our spirit. This happens as we behold Jesus; seeing the way he related with the Father and with men when he walked this earth through what was written about him in scriptures (2Cor. 3:18). Another key to manifest His nature is praying in tongues for a long time. For as we do so, we are building ourselves up in the spirit (Jude 1:20), being empowered to reflect His nature.
One who is humble is one who submits to the word; words from God directly and through men, for Jesus Christ humbled Himself and became obedient unto death (Phil. 2:8-9).
Prayer Point
Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help us to behold Him and to spend more time praying in tongues so we can manifest His nature in us.
