Not everyone who says to me, โ€˜Lord, Lord,โ€™ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. ย Matthew 7:21 NIV

Last week, while in the office, the scriptural verse above came to mind, and there was a question in my heart: what are those things specifically called the will of the Father? After meditating on them for a while, there was a strong need to share, which I will be doing again today.

The words of Jesus Christ in Matthew 7:21 show that a mere confession is not enough for salvation, but doing the will of the Father. There, the Lord was exalting the work of faith above merely confessing faith, as it takes a dimension of faith to call Jesus Lord and to perform miracles in His name. Reading through the Scriptures, there were specific places where God mentioned His will expressly, such as in 1 Thessalonians 4:3:

It is Godโ€™s will that you should be sanctified: that you should avoid sexual immorality (NIV).

So, if a believer practices sexual immorality, that person is not doing the will of the Father and stands the chance of being rejected at the end, according to Matthew 7:21. This individual may be very gifted, yet he or she is outside the will of the Father. The people Jesus rejected at the end, according to what was written in Matthew 7, He called them โ€œworkers of iniquity.โ€ Actively being involved in sexual sins puts your salvation at risk.

Another place where something was specifically called the will of God is 1 Thessalonians 5:18:

Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is Godโ€™s will for you in Christ Jesus (NIV).

Being unthankful can make you lose your salvation. This was most profound when I spent time thinking about it last week. Some of the Israelites did not inherit the promise because they were unthankful and complained in the wilderness. When Scripture instructs us to give thanks in all circumstances, it affirms that there will be circumstances we will not call good, but we still need to give thanks for them. Giving thanks, especially in unfavorable situations, is one of the greatest expressions of faith, as it affirms that you believe that God makes all things work together for your good. The Israelites did not know this, which was why they complained in the wilderness and turned back to Egypt in their minds.

The will of the Father is not limited to what I have shared above, as it includes every instruction of the New Testament and His personal instructions to you. I shared the above because they were specifically mentioned as the will of God in Scripture.
