That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep
(1 Cor. 11:30 NIV).
In recent days, the emphasis of my writing has been “salvation by grace through faith.” This has become important because many believers have forgotten the basis of our faith and have fallen into the sin of self-righteousness unconsciously. However, because we are saved by grace, does it mean we should continue in sin?
God’s attitude toward sin hasn’t changed; He hated sin in the Old Covenant, and He hates sin in the New Covenant. Though we are saved simply by grace through faith, there are consequences of sins; God judges sin. When writing to the Corinthian Church, Apostle Paul mentioned several consequences of their sin of dishonoring the Lord’s body. He said, “That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep (1 Cor. 11:30 NIV).” This means sometimes the reason people feel weak, sick, and die is because God is judging them for their sins.
When one was caught in sexual immorality among the Corinthian Church, Apostle Paul said, “Hand this man over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved on the day of the Lord (1 Cor. 5:5 NIV),” indicating that Satan can be given authority to afflict a believer as judgment for their sins. So, we see God still judges sin in the New Covenant.
Just as a natural father chastises his son or daughter, God chastises us in the New Covenant. He does so because He wants us to learn and share in His holiness (Hebrews 12:10). This is why only sons who have gone through chastening are considered legitimate by God (see Hebrews 12:8). However, we can avoid being judged by simply judging ourselves. Apostle Paul said, “For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged (1 Cor. 11:31 KJV).” We judge ourselves by acknowledging our wrong before God and asking Him for mercy.
The writer of Hebrews admonished his readers, “…that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness (Hebrews 3:13 NIV).” This means sin has the capacity to harden the heart of a believer if we persist in it, and a hardened heart stops believing; an unbelieving heart is cut off from the faith. My brothers and sisters, leave sin!
Prayer Point:
Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him to help us live righteously, knowing His judgments.
