But the one who does not know and does things deserving punishment will be beaten with few blows. From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, much more will be asked. Luke 12:48ย
ย
If A is given 5 orangesย and B is given 10 orangesย and both are asked to give away oranges, it is expected that B should give more than A. This is very logical and it is what Jesus says in our opening verse today. If you know more of the truth,ย more is expected from you. But knowing is not equal to doing because we still have free will. ย
You see,ย knowledge is power. The bible says in Hosea 4:6 โMy people are destroyed for lack of knowledge: …โ. When we look at the world people are lost in confusion. Some are men claiming to women and vise versal. All sorts of unimaginable things. But this is very normal when you are not aware of the truth (or know it but reject it). But when we come into Christ, we discover the truth and are set free. No more do we just follow the dictates of our flesh or just any imagination but we subject it under the scrutiny and direction of the Holy spirit. As we get to know and practice more of the truth, our minds are continually renewed. We grow in spirit. ย
We begin to act differently and better than we used to before. But there is a temptation that comes in. That is the temptation to judge others and condemn them. Yes, we must hate sin but love the sinner. Remember that you are better because of Jesus and without Jesus you donโt know if you would have beenย worse. The person you see as badย and yourself as better than may actually be surpassing expectations in the lord’s sight. Our role is to love and try to be understanding not judgmental. ย
Saint Paul says in 1 Corinthians 13:11 โWhen I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me.โ As an adult is expected to behave as an adult so it is with spiritual maturity. You canโt handle things the same way you used to do it before you encountered Jesus or when you just became born again. It might be that before you were born again you were hot tempered and would react impulsively when offended but as you grow in knowledge of the truth it should reflect it your composure and character. Another example is asking for forgiveness. Generally, in every disagreement both parties have a fault sometimes with one person more at fault than the other but it takes the one who is more spiritually mature to quickly say โSORRY, I erred, forgive meโ. Doesnโt mean Heย was not wronged it only means He is seeking peace which is what we must do as much as we can. (Romans 12:18)ย
