Blessed are all they that put their trust in him. Psalm 2:12 KJV

_ยถ Trust and obey, for there is no other way, to be happy with Jesus but to Trust and Obey.. ยถ_ is a song we sing in Church regularly back home in Nigeria. The song is filled with meanings, and usually, The Holy Spirit does bring it to my memory any time God is instructing me in a direction I do not feel comfortable with. Trust in God is an important part of our faith, as it is by it He can be truly God to us, and a way to express our confidence in Him.

Men of faith in both the old and the new testament did experience supernatural intervention by God because they trusted in Him, while others, like Moses, did lose out on God’s best for them because they did not trust. With this, how to trust in God is something we should seek to understand and not assume we know already.

In simple terms, we trust in God when we obey Him, despite the prevailing circumstances. It is also expressed by seeking God first concerning any issue before looking somewhere else for solutions. To see this from scriptures, let’s consider what happened between Moses and the children of Israel (Num. 20: 2-13). In a time the people of Israel requested for water, God instructed Moses to speak to the rock that followed them, and water will flow from it. Because Moses was angry, he rather strock the rock twice. God response to Moses was: … โ€œBecause you did not trust in me enough to honor me as holy in the sight of the Israelites, you will not bring this community into the land I give them.โ€ (Num.20:12 NIV). We see, because Moses did not act as instructed, God said He did not trust in Him. So, we trust in God by being obedient to His instructions. This was the same kind of trust Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego demonstratedย ย  when they refused to bow to the Golden Image of Nebuchadnezzar (Dan. 3: 14 -29). Their refusal to bow was because they were obeying God’s instructions not to worship any other God before Him (Exo. 34:14).

Again, when the Israelites faced war, they decided to consult Egypt without consulting God first. God’s response to their actions revealed their lack of trust in Him. He said: “For without consulting me, you have gone down to Egypt for help. You have put your trust in Pharaohโ€™s protection. You have tried to hide in his shade (Isaiah 30:2 NLT)“. We see, taking any action without communicating with God first, asking for his help or direction, is a sign of lack of trust in Him. This was the sin of King Asa, who consulted with the doctors for his ailment without consulting God (2Chro. 16:12). Therefore, as we develop our relationship with God and seek Him first before anyone, we are demonstrating our trust in Him.

One thing we should know is that, when we Trust God by obeying Him, we should not mind the outcome of our obedience. For example, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were willing to obey God, even if He did not intervene in their situation. They said: “the God we serve is able to deliver us from it, and he will deliver us from Your Majestyโ€™s hand. But even if he does not, we want you to know, Your Majesty, that we will not serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up. (Dan. 3:18 )โ€ ย This is true confidence in Him.

When we live by trusting in God, we are truly blessed, for the scriptures says: โ€œBut blessed are those who trust in the Lord and have made the Lord their hope and confidence (Jeremiah 17:7NLT).
