The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.”
Genesis 11:6 NIV
Yesterday, I wrote about the power of unity, where I revealed that there’s no limit to human attainment when we are united. This is confirmed by the statement God made about those who thought of building the tower of Babel in Genesis 11:6. Again, I mentioned that unity can be attained when we learn humility, love, and when we pray.
Today, I am going to reveal how to utilise the ministry of the Holy Spirit to attain unity in the body of Christ. Now, when God spoke about the unity of the world at the time they thought of building the tower of Babel, He mentioned that they were speaking the same language, which was a reason they were united.
Because their unity was against His will, He separated them by separating their languages. So, the world was divided based on the languages they spoke. As we must have understood, unity is the will of God, but the people of Babel were divided because they were not doing the will of God, but following the promptings of the devil.
Just before Jesus Christ died on the cross, He mentioned something in His prayer to the Father for His disciples, invariably, the Church. He said, “… I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one” (John 17:22), expressing His desire for us to be one by giving us the glory He received from the Father.
Jesus gave us the glory by giving us the Holy Spirit, because the Holy Spirit is the Spirit of Glory (1 Peter 4:14, Romans 6:4, Romans 8:11). Now, the Holy Spirit as an instrument to attain unity was indicated when He came upon the disciples in Acts 2, and He gave them utterance to speak in tongues (Acts 2:1-13), unifying their language of humanity, for everyone understood them.
What happened on the day of Pentecost was an undoing of what God did at Babel, indicating that humans can once again be united, but not against His will this time. Despite this truth, we still see what looks like division in the body of Christ, as different opinions exist.
From what Apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 3, we know it’s because some sections of the Church are immature (carnal). However, as we build ourselves up by praying in the Holy Ghost, we are growing as a body and as individuals into Him, that is, Christ who is the head.
This will result in us being fully matured, resulting in us reaching the unity of faith and the knowledge of Christ Jesus (Ephesians 4:13). As we engage the ministry of the Holy Spirit, especially praying in tongues, the people of God will be empowered to see the body of Christ as one, thereby transforming into the same image (2 Cor 3:18).
Prayer Points
Let’s thank God for His word. Let’s ask Him to help the Body of Christ utilise the ministry of the Holy Spirit to attain unity.
