Whoso keepeth the fig tree shall eat the fruit thereof: so he that waiteth on his master shall be honoured.
Proverbs 27:18 KJV
The phrase “waiting on God” is commonly used amongst God’s people. However, the understanding of the phrase most people have is that it means to wait for God to fulfill His promises or turn our situation around. However, there’s a deeper meaning to the phrase, one that suggests intimacy with God.
The word “Waiteth” as used in our opening scriptural verse was translated from the Hebrew word “shรขmar“, which means to “keep“, “observe“, “watchman“, etc. Every meaning of the word “shamar” infers the service of a servant to his master. In the old Jewish culture, servants were to wait on their master by being aware of their master and being expectant to hear his instructions. It’s a position of sensitivity to the voice of the master, just like a waiter in a restaurant stays aware of a customer to take his or her orders.
So, to wait on God also means to be in constant awareness of His presence and being sensitive to hear His voice. When Elijah and the Angel Gabriel described themselves as ones “who stand in the presence of God” (1 Kings 17:1, Luke 1:19), they were saying that they are always in the awareness of God’s presence and are sensitive to hear and respond to His voice. Which means, they wait on God.
People who wait on God in the manner described above are those whom the Lord sends with a message or performs an act on God’s behalf. These are people who can be truly described as God’s servants, for only such as these can know and do His will. Also, from the speech of John the Baptist, a friend of God is one who waits to hear His voice (John 3:29).
Furthermore, God entrusts great authority to those who wait on Him. Elijah was able to stop rain from falling for over three years because he stood before the Lord (1 Kings 17:1, James 5:17-18), and the Angel Gabriel was able to pass judgment on Zachariah because he was one who stands before the Lord (Luke 1:11-20). When we are those who wait on the Lord (stand before Him), great authority is placed in our lips, and whatever we say (good or bad) comes to pass.
The practice of intimacy, especially moment-by-moment intimacy, helps increase our awareness of His presence and sensitivity to His voice.
