And David behaved wisely in all his ways, and the LORD was with him.
1 Samuel 18:14 NKJV
After offering a thousand burnt offerings, Solomon had an encounter where the Holy Spirit helped him ask for wisdom (1 Kings 3:5-14). After receiving this wisdom, the first thing we notice is that his discernment of God’s will increased, as he went to Jerusalem to sacrifice before the ark of the Lord (where, according to scripture, he was to sacrifice), and not at Gibeon, where he initially sacrificed (1 Chronicles 1:3-6, 2 Chronicles 1:3-6).
Again, the wisdom of God in Solomon’s life was declared to the whole of Israel when he made a decision between two women; through their reactions, he was able to determine who was the mother of the child (1 Kings 3:16-28). From the impartation of wisdom in Solomon’s life, we can say that wisdom is the ability to make good judgements or decisions. Each day, we are confronted with numerous options to choose from; when we walk in wisdom, our decisions will always align with God’s will.
To walk in wisdom, one must continually meditate on God’s word. The Bible contains God’s will, and as we spend time reading and studying, we become acquainted with His will and are able to choose it. Furthermore, to walk in wisdom, we must learn to listen. Wisdom’s instructions often come through counsel, either through the Holy Spirit within us or people He brings our way to speak to us. When we listen to wise counsel, we can walk in wisdom. Sensitivity helps us receive the Spirit’s counsel.
A proud person cannot walk in wisdom because they cannot submit to God’s word. With humility, we can easily yield to wisdom’s instructions from scriptures or through counsel. Additionally, when we love and fear the Lord, obedience becomes effortless, and wisdom is obedience to instructions. As we grow in our fear and love for God, we grow in wisdom, for ”the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10, Psalm 111:10).
Finally, if we are overly concerned about men’s opinions, we cannot walk in wisdom, for “the wisdom of God is foolishness to those who are perishing” (1 Corinthians 1:18-25, 1 Corinthians 3:18-20).
