And David behaved wisely in all his ways, and the Lord was with him. Therefore, when Saul saw that he behaved very wisely, he was afraid of him.
โ€” 1 Samuel 18:14โ€“15 NKJV

Shortly after David defeated Goliath and was enlisted into the army, the Scripture affirmed a quality that David had: โ€œhe behaved himself wisely.โ€ One would expect that his brave act of killing Goliath, which delivered Israel from mockery and slavery in the land of the Philistines, would make the hearts of all positively disposed towards him. But it wasnโ€™t so, as the Scriptures recorded that Saul became jealous of him and was afraid of him (1 Samuel 18:8โ€“9).

In the few years I have been on earth, I have come to realize that you donโ€™t have to do wrong for people to hate you or be negatively disposed towards you. With this known, the necessity of walking wisely among people, even believers, becomes obvious. The brothers of Joseph sought to kill him, not for an evil he did, but because he had a dream from God (Genesis 37:18โ€“20). We can avoid unnecessary troubles when we walk wisely among people.

Though we are walking wisely by living in obedience to the Word of God, we have to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit at all times. When sensitive, we can discern the hearts of people towards us, which will guide us in how to relate with them. If Joseph could have discerned the hearts of his brothers towards him, he wouldnโ€™t have shared his dream with them (Genesis 37:5โ€“8).

Seeking affirmation or validation from people is not an attribute of one who walks wisely, as a wise person should be content with Godโ€™s opinion of him and not the approval of men. Saul lost the kingdom because he wanted to please the people instead of God (1 Samuel 15:24โ€“28), but Davidโ€™s heart was to please the Lord (Acts 13:22).

Apostle Paul said: โ€œโ€ฆdo not be foolish, but understand what the Lordโ€™s will isโ€ (Ephesians 5:17 NIV), suggesting that seeking to know the will of God is the activity of the wise. We find this in David, who was always inquiring of God about his next steps (1 Samuel 23:2, 4; 2 Samuel 5:19).

Wisdom will only preserve you when you walk with her counsel.

Prayer Points:

  • Letโ€™s thank God for His Word today.
  • Letโ€™s ask Him to help us walk wisely before people.
