Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
Matthew 7:16 KJV

When Jesus was warning His disciples against false prophets, He taught them how to recognize them by their fruits, and not their gifts or the accuracy of the word they preach. His words opened a large array of what is considered false by Him, as one may have a true gift, but yet be considered false because of his or her character, like Balaam.

This is a call for caution for all called by God, because if we do not manifest the character of God, we will fall under the category of false. Now, when we speak about fruits, obvious sins like fornication and adultery are what will come to the minds of people. Though these are obvious sins, they are not all we should guard against. When speaking about the fruit of the Holy Spirit, scripture says: โ€œBut the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulnessโ€ (Galatians 5:22). So, when Jesus Christ said โ€œby their fruits you shall know themโ€, He was saying โ€œif we donโ€™t find the fruit of the Spirit, then they are false.โ€

I have seen preachers who preach purity but lack love. I have seen people greatly gifted in the prophetic but who are not humble. These may be called and sent by God, but their results will be false because they lack the fruit of the Spirit. Todayโ€™s Call to Prayer is not meant to be judgmental, but it is a call for us to be cautious and check the fruits we bear. Balaam had a true calling, but he pioneered a way that leads away from Christ (2 Peter 2:15).

To ensure we bear good fruits, we must maintain fellowship with the Holy Spirit and abide in the Word, because on our own, we cannot do it. Being anointed is not the apexโ€”the devil is anointedโ€”but bearing good fruits is rewardable, and it takes being intentional to do so.

My brothers and sisters, letโ€™s take time to do a self-reflection. Beyond the message we preach and the gifts we manifest, are we bearing good fruits? We will be known by the fruit we bear.

Prayer Points

  • Letโ€™s thank God for His word today.
  • Letโ€™s ask Him to help us bear good fruits.
