Title: What do you know?

24 Meanwhile a Jew named Apollos,ย a native of Alexandria, came to Ephesus.ย He was a learned man, with a thorough knowledge of the Scriptures.ย 25ย He had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and he spoke with great fervor[a]ย and taught about Jesus accurately, though he knew only the baptism of John. Acts 18:24-25
Some circumstances in life can be very intimidating and challenging. For instance, when you are called to be a witness but you do not have the full details of events that transpired. This can lead to nervousness, tension, and possibly complete blackout. I was once in a courtroom where people came forward to testify. Those who were giving false testimonies were clearly visible. The tone of voice, demeanour, posture, etc gave clues that those people did not know the complete picture. The situation can be more burdensome when you want to witness Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is without a doubt the most talked about person in history. Why? Because He was and is still unique. There are various arguments about His life, death, resurrection, and even the significance of His sacrifice.
So, because of these dimensions and diverse opinions, many believers are often put off from witnessing Jesus Christ because they believe they do not know much and must wait until they know everything. This is a great deception from the pit of hell. You do not need to know the whole Bible before you can preach about Jesus Christ. In today’s two verses, we read that Apollos spoke boldly though all that he knew was the baptism of John. He would not keep quiet just because he does not know everything. He did not just speak about what he knew but he spoke boldly. I will not get into the meanings of the baptism of John, the baptism of Jesus Christ, and the baptism of the Holy Spirit. That is beyond the scope of this message.
The focus of today’s message is the character of Apollos. One thing we should not lose sight of is that, in the early days of the church, baptism was a big issue, and it is still important in our days. So, being a learned person and not knowing it can be embarrassing. Despite not having sufficient knowledge about it Apollos did not refuse to proclaim the gospel. He talked about what he knew. Beloved, you do not need to be a Bible scholar to witness God. If it is just “God loves you” or “Jesus is the savior” that you know from the Bible, just take it along and proclaim it boldly and confidently. The power to cause changes to occur is the work of the Holy Spirit. People of God, it is about time we forgo all excuses to evangelise. We do not have time. Rapture will occur anytime soon. Let us do the work of the One who sent us while it is day. May we be blessed!
Prayer Point:
Let us thank God for the gift of a new month, a new day, and the answers to our prayers. Let us pray for the boldness and confidence to proclaim the gospel of Jesus Christ.
