โWhat do you want me to do for you?โ Jesus asked. โMy Rabbi,โ the blind man said, โI want to see!โ ย Mark 10:51 (NLT)
Shortly before Jesus Christ went to the cross, He told the disciples, “If you have seen me, you have seen the Father” (John 14:9). This means that to understand the heart of the Father, we only need to look at Jesus Christ and see the way He operated when He was on earth.
When Jesus walked the earth, He usually had conversations with those who desired Him to minister to them. The purpose of this conversation was to reveal their faith or lack of faith. For example, when the woman of Canaan came out to Him, seeking deliverance for her daughter (See Matthew 15:21-39), Jesus Christ didn’t immediately respond to her request but acted as though He wasn’t interested. As the conversation ensued, He ended by saying, “O woman, great is your faith” (verse 28), when she responded meekly and wasn’t offended by His statement.
From the interactions Jesus had with people He ministered to, we can discern what faith is and what to do if you lack faith (Matthew 8:10, Mark 9:24). The conversation of interest in today’s Call to Prayer is that which He had with the blind man in Mark 10. The scriptures recorded that when the blind man heard that Jesus was passing by, he shouted, “Thou Son of David, have mercy on me” (Mark 10:47). When Jesus Christ gave him His attention, you would expect that He would just go ahead and heal him since he was a blind man crying for mercy. Rather, Jesus Christ asked, “What do you want me to do for you?” (Mark 10:51)
The question Jesus Christ asked the blind man may sound rhetorical, as his case is obvious, but it isn’t. For some people, when they spend a long time without receiving their desires, they stop expecting God to grant their desires, thinking that if He has not done it all this while, He is unwilling or unable. So, when the blind man said, “I want to see,” it was an expression of faith because he had not lost hope of receiving his sight despite how long he had been blind.
Like the blind man, when we are definite about what we want, not being swayed by the discouraging voices of people, the severity of the situation, and how long we have endured it, God sees it as faith, and He grants our desires.
