For the grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say โ€˜Noโ€™ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,ย  Titus 2:11โ€“12 NIV

Yesterday, we learnt that the devil’s trick hasn’t changed, that he still deceives people into thinking that there are no consequences for their sin, as he did to Eve in the garden. This deception comes in the guise of a false understanding of grace, which desensitises people to the consequences of their actions.

Now, what does the true grace of God actually teach? From what Paul wrote to Titus, he revealed that grace โ€œโ€ฆ teaches us to say โ€˜Noโ€™ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present ageโ€ (Titus 2:11โ€“12 NIV). So, we see that the true grace message admonishes us to walk in righteousness, while the voice of the enemy (a false grace message) encourages one to sin without minding the consequences.

During His earthly ministry, Jesus Christ, who is the grace of God, admonished us, with all seriousness, to walk in all ways pleasing to God. He even said, โ€œAnd if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fireโ€ (Matthew 18:9 NKJV), though not meaning it literally, but such statements revealed how seriously He wanted us to walk in righteousness.

Let us not forget that it was grace, Jesus, who rejected some people at the end, saying they were workers of iniquity (Matthew 7:23). And Apostle Paul, who was a vessel through whom more understanding of grace came to the church, said, โ€œFor if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will liveโ€ (Romans 8:13 NKJV).

Brothers and sisters, let us deliver ourselves from the devil’s deception by yielding in obedience to God and walking in the fear of God. For though grace reveals the forgiving nature of God and the free access we have to His throne, it is in no way an encouragement to remain in sin.
