“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” Hebrews 4: 16
Did you know that in the strict sense of Justice, there is no mercy? For instance, if I kill a person and you say will remove my penalty. Is that not injustice to the one who was killed? So Jesus Christ died in our place so that we can obtain mercy. With this, Justice is satisfied because the wages of sin are paid for which is death (Ezekiel 18:20, Romans 6: 23, ) and on the other hand, mercy is obtained. But just like a gift, if you don’t accept it, it is not yours. So despite Jesus Christ died for all,ย not all have accepted and believed, so not all are benefitting from Jesus’s death (John 3: 16).
Another aspect of why Jesus died other than mercy is to give us access to power (Holy Spirit). God has awesome plans for each and every one of us. Plans to prosper us and of good and not of evil (Jeremiah 29: 11, Matthew 6:30). However He cannot execute all of those plans if we don’t enter a relationship with Him. This is where Jesus comes in. Jesus is the one who paid for our sins so that for those who accept, we enter the presence of God and access the power to trust and obey God. The first aspect of that power is the Holy Spirit dwelling in whoever believes in Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:13-14, Philippians 2:13).ย He is our connection to God’s presence, a.k.a Heaven. That’s why the bible says we are seated with him in heavenly places in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 2:6). Another way to put is since we are on the earth but now spiritually in heaven, we have access to heavenly resources to fulfil God’s awesome plans that benefit the life of others but also your life, in addition to your accolades(rewards) awaiting you in heaven depending on the extend to which you utilize the heaven resources (Matthew 16:27). One of those heavenly resources is the word of God. The Holy Spirit in us inspires us to study the Word and helps us understand. As we do, we grow in wisdom and faith to trust and obey God. But still being in the world, we can again fall into temptations i.e. yield to the desires of the flesh(amplified by the devil) instead of the Holy Spirit. However, as you keep believing in Jesus you are able to run back to the presence of God and obtain mercy and grace(power) to continue the walk with God (1 John 1:7-9).
We are therefore to understand that Jesus and His word are what gives us access to mercy (be in right standing with God) and power to walk in love, for this is the summary of God’s will; that we love one another as He loves us (John 13:34-35). Without His mercy through Christ, we don’t have access to God’s presence where there is power to do His will.
Prayer Point:ย
Let’s thank God and His son Jesus for mercy through Jesus’s suffering and death. Let’s pray for grace to draw closer knowing we are forgiven by His blood and obtain power to trust and obey God.
