Title: What To Do With The Body

I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway.

(1 Corinthians 9:27 KJV)

We are still on the topic, โ€œSpiritual Growthโ€ and we have learnt so far that if someone comes to Christ, he becomes a new creation. However, itโ€™s the Spirit of that person that is re-created and becomes new, but the body and soul remain the same. We have also learnt that the Spirit and the Body are in contention over who controls the Soul because whoever controls the Soul, controls your life. In the previous weeks, we talked about how to the Spirit can grow and what we can do to make the Soul more sensitive and subjective to the Spirit. However, what can we do to the Body, so it wonโ€™t control our lives?

Apostle Paul is telling us in the above verse to discipline our Body or keep the Body under control and make it our slave. The Body always desires to sleep, eat, drink, fornicate, play, hate, get angry, be jealous, be wicked and many evil pleasures you could ever think of. Due to this, when the Body is not kept under control, it will disgrace you, destroy you and take you to Hell. I have seen great Ministries and Businesses brought down because the leader couldnโ€™t control the Body. I personally know a relative whose life became miserable because of his anger and temper. I have cousins who couldnโ€™t excel in their academics and further their education because of pleasure.

Whenever I read the above scripture, I think about how great a man of God Apostle Paul was, yet he wrote this. When we consider Apostle Paul, we see a great man of God, a man Faith, Revelation, Anointing, Power and Miracles. However, he was still cautious and afraid of what the body can do to him if itโ€™s not kept under control. How much more you and I? This should actually tell us to also focus more on disciplining our bodies. This is because, it doesnโ€™t matter how Anointed and Gifted you are, if you donโ€™t discipline your body, it will destroy you.

Itโ€™s very sad that many believers are still controlled by the desires of the Body and this makes others question if they are really Born Again. I know a Pastor who led his friend to Christ and laid his hands on his friend to receive the Holy Spirit, and he began speaking in Tongues. The Pastor left for his house afterwards. A few hours later, he decided to go and check up on his friend and to his surprise, his friend who just accepted Christ was in the room with his girlfriend doing their own things. The friend was Born Again but couldnโ€™t discipline his body.

The presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives produces fruits, and one of them is Self-Control (Gal. 5:22). Having regular Fasting and Prayers also strengthen you to be able to easily control the Body. I wonโ€™t end without pointing to the fact that, a lot of effort is still required on our side to apply certain disciplinary measures which can help keep the body under control. For example, being active in Church and Christian activities, having Christian friends but unbeliever acquaintances, being selective on what we watch etc. I remember in my Shepherd-Training, we were taught to always go in pairs whenever we are visiting someone of the opposite sex, and we also donโ€™t have to visit late in the night. As youths, we are prone to certain lusts and these measures are helpful to keep us from compromising situations. The Bible advises us to flee youthful lust (2 Tim. 2:22). In some situations, it is better to flee than to fight! It is very important to know that some Bodies are more prone to certain desires than others. You know what your Body is prone to so apply the necessary disciplinary measures that will restrict it from doing what it pleases.

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service (Rom 12:1).

Beloved in the Lord, our Body is the Temple of the Holy Ghost (1 Cor. 6:19). Therefore, letโ€™s be always conscious of this and sacrifice our bodies to the service of God instead of pleasure.

Prayer Point:

Letโ€™s thank God for His Grace and Mercies and for giving us His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ to die for our sins. Letโ€™s ask God to help all believers to discipline their Body and make it their slave. Letโ€™s also ask God to help us live in the consciousness that our Body is the Temple of the Holy Ghost.

God bless you all.
