Title: Who is your god?

24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.  Matthew 6:24

If I were to ask you, who is your god? Expectedly as a believer you would say “God or Jesus”. And indeed that is who we are to serve; God, not anything or anyone else. Not money. 

Money by itself is nothing. It could be a piece of metal or a piece of paper. But with money you can get so many things. So we desire money for the things we hope to get using it. For example comfort, fame, food, luxury etc. So when Jesus says you cannot serve both God and money, He is also saying you can’t serve God and other desires like pride, greed, fame, lust etc because those desires are the reason for the chase of the money.

So again, coming back to the question; who is your god? Are you serving God or money. Is your desire for God or for other things? Well, Scriptures do not say desire for other things other than God is always evil. Rather, it says; Put God first. Seek God first. Submit all desires under the will of God. 

It is easy to say yes I serve God but it is when tests come that we would truly know if you serve God or something else. Imagine the Prophet Balaam who when reading about his first account in Numbers 22-25, we can see that Balaam demonstrates a fear of God by saying only what the Lord told him. But latter on we learn from Numbers 31:16 and 2 Peter 2:15 that he was the one who gave bad advice to the Moabites on how to destroy the Israelites all for money. 

We can learn from Balaam’s end that we have to watch and pray because the love of money can take us away from the faith just as the Bible warns us in Timothy 6:10:

10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

Prayer Point: 

May God reveal to us any idols in our hearts that is contending to take the place of God in our hearts. May God help us purge ourselves as we engage in prayer, fasting and study of the word.
