Title: Why Few Are Chosen

For many are called, but few are chosen.  (Matthew 22:14 KJV)

Two weeks ago, I shared a message titled, “Many Are Called” where we learned that God has called many people to do His work, and irrespective of what we have done, God can and is ready to use us. However, the same verse (Matthew 22:14) that says many are called ended with, “but few are chosen.” God has called many people but only a few respond to the call and give their lives wholly to the work of God. Why is it so? To be able to answer this question, let’s consider the whole parable of our Lord Jesus (Matthew 22:1-14) and focus on where He called a group of people but only a few remained.

In Matthew 22:5, we can see that some people didn’t respond to the master’s invitation because they made light of it and went about their own business. Most people don’t know how privileged they are to be called by God and so, they don’t take the call seriously. We tend to take our Job, Business, Education, and family more seriously than the work of God. However, there are only a few who take the call of God seriously, and these are the chosen ones.

Also, one man who came to the Wedding did not put on proper clothes which signifies a lack of respect for the call (Matthew 22:11). It was customary for wedding guests to be given wedding clothes to wear to the banquet. It was unthinkable to refuse to wear these clothes. That would insult the host, who could only assume that the guest was arrogant and thought he didn’t need these clothes, or that he didn’t want to take part in the wedding celebration.

We are called to be holy and be light and salt of this world (Matt 5:13-16). Due to this, we need to make some changes or adjustments to our old life in order to be what God wants us to be.  We have to sacrifice our old habits, time, bad friends, addictions, pleasure, etc. so we can effectively fulfill the call of God. The truth is that, if we really respect the call of God, it will be easier for us to sacrifice worldly pleasures. However, many people are not ready to make the necessary changes or adjustments and that’s why only a few are chosen.

Beloved in the Lord, God has called many people to do His work but whether we will be among the chosen ones or not depends on how we respond to the call. Let’s take the call seriously and respond by giving our lives wholly to the work of God.

Let’s thank God for His word. Let’s ask God to help every believer take our call seriously and respond to it, so we can be among the chosen ones.
