For many are called, but few are chosen.
(Matthew 22:14 KJV)
ย
In last weekโs Call to Prayer, I shared a message titled “Many Are Called”, where we learned that God has called many people to do His work, and that regardless of what we have done in the past, God can and is ready to use us. However, the same verse (Matt 22:14) that says, โmany are calledโ ends with โbut few are chosen.โ
God calls many, but only a few respond to His call and give their lives fully to His work. Why is that so?
To understand this, letโs take a closer look at the full parable of Jesus in Matthew 22:1โ14, focusing on the group of people who were invited, but only a few remained.
In Matthew 22:5, we see that some people did not respond to the masterโs invitation because they made light of it and went about their own business. Many people today donโt realize how privileged they are to be called by God, and as a result, they donโt take the call seriously.
We tend to prioritize our jobs, businesses, education, and families over the work of God. However, there are a few who honor the call and take it seriouslyโthese are the chosen ones.
Furthermore, in Matthew 22:11, one man came to the wedding but didnโt wear the proper wedding garment, which symbolized a lack of respect for the call. In those days, it was customary for wedding guests to be given proper clothing for the banquet. Refusing to wear it was an insult to the host. It suggested arrogance or disinterest in truly participating in the celebration.
Similarly, when God calls us, He expects us to live holy lives and be the light and salt of the earth. This means we must be willing to make changesโletting go of bad habits, negative influences, addictions, and worldly pleasures. These sacrifices show that we respect the call of God. However, many are not ready to make these adjustments, and thatโs why only a few are chosen.
Beloved in the Lord, God has called many people to serve Him, but whether we are among the chosen depends on how we respond. Let us take Godโs call seriously and devote our lives wholly to His work.
Prayer Point:
Let us thank God for His Word today. Letโs ask Him to help every believer take their call seriously and respond to it wholeheartedly, so we can be among the chosen ones.
God bless you all.
