“Blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” And Abraham gave him a tenth of everything.
Genesis 14:20 (KJV)
The subject of tithing has caused significant division within the body of Christ regarding its practice. Different opposing views exist, with some considering it necessary to access God’s blessings, even salvation, while others see it as unnecessary, undermining the finished work of Christ and making the Gospel transactional. With this division, clarity is essential.
The word “tithe” simply means a tenth. It was first mentioned when Abraham encountered Melchizedek after defeating four kings in battle (Genesis 14:17-20). Abraham gave Melchizedek a tenth of all the spoils after Melchizedek blessed him. Although tithing was commanded in the Law of Moses (the Old Covenant), it predates it. Under the Law of Moses, access to blessings came through obedience to commands, and disobedience resulted in curses. This is why God spoke in Malachi, warning priests for disobeying the tithing command and reminding them of its blessing: He would rebuke the devourer for their sake (Malachi 3:10-12).
For us in the New Covenant, we have been delivered from the curse of the Law, and access to blessings comes through faith (Galatians 3:13-14). Each of us has been blessed with every spiritual blessing in Christ. There is no specific instruction for Christians to tithe in the New Covenant, but we are instructed to give joyfully (2 Corinthians 9:6-7). Though Jesus discussed tithing with Jews under the Law (Matthew 23:23-24), as He came under the Law to deliver those under the Law (Galatians 4:4-5), there is no direct instruction from Jesus or the Apostles for Christians to tithe.
Is tithing wrong for Christians? No. Though we are only instructed to give, tithing is a form of giving. Unlike those under the Old Covenant, we should not give our tithe seeking blessings or fearing curses, but as those appreciating God’s blessings in our lives. Abraham gave his tithe after Melchizedek blessed him, signifying appreciation and honoring Melchizedek.
A Christian has already been blessed with all spiritual blessings in Christ (Ephesians 1:3). Following Abraham’s example, we can give a tenth of what we have as appreciation for God’s blessings (Tithe is thanksgiving). We are not obligated, and we can give more. A Christian cannot be cursed.
