Why Should I Tithe? Part 2
Call To Prayer
Topic: Why Should I Tithe? Part 2

“Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Test me in this,” says the LORD Almighty, “and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out so much blessing that there will not be room enough to store it.” – Malachi 3:10 NIV
In yesterday’s Call to Prayer, I revealed that, though the law has been abolished, Christians can still be led by the Holy Spirit, either directly or through their church organization, to tithe. However, tithing should not be done with the mindset of those in the Old Testament, who tithe to avoid a curse or seek blessings. Instead, we should tithe as an appreciation of God’s blessings, just like Abraham, who tithed after being blessed as a thanksgiving seed (Genesis 14:20).
Today, we will explore another reason why we should tithe. Despite the Old Covenant being abolished for us in Christ, we can still understand God’s mind through what is written there. This is why the Bible says, “All Scripture is God-breathed…” (2 Timothy 3:16). The word “All” suggests it includes what was written in the Old Covenant. The first apostles didn’t have what we call the New Testament in the Bible, and they preached Christ through what is written in the Old. When we gave our lives to Christ, the veil covering our understanding was removed (2 Corinthians 3:16), allowing us to see the Glory of God hidden from those in the Old Covenant.
When God mandated the people of Israel to tithe, it was to ensure finance would be available in God’s house to care for its needs and those of His ministers. When the people defaulted on their tithe payments, God responded, saying, “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house…” (Malachi 3:10 NIV). Though we are in the New Covenant, there are still needs in the physical house of God or places of fellowship. Everything requires payment in our world today: building rent, electricity, internet, etc. Moreover, God’s ministers have needs, as accepting the call can be sacrificial.
If tithing was God’s wisdom for caring for His house in the Old Covenant, this wisdom can also apply in the New Covenant, though with a different mindset, recognizing what God has done for us in Christ. People should not tithe to make heaven or receive blessings in Christ; instead, they should tithe as a seed of thanksgiving for His blessings and to help God’s house stay funded.
When we clarify this for God’s people, they will practice giving through tithing joyfully, and only then can they receive their reward (2 Corinthians 9:7-8). However, using false narratives to compel people gives the accuser an avenue to accuse, and God’s people may become discouraged, feeling deceived.
Giving to support God’s work is an act God greatly rewards. Tithe with the right mindset from today.
Prayer Point:
Let’s thank God for His Word today. Let’s ask Him to help us give our tithes with the right mindset.
