4 Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. 2 After fasting forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. 3 The tempter came to him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.”

4 Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’” Mathew 4:1-4

Beloved in Christ, we are in a spiritual battle in this world (1 Peter 5:8). And that battle is probably more often than not in the mind. Our real enemy, the Devil still tries to rule over our minds despite we that believe have been set free through Jesus’s death and resurrection. He tries to rule over us through lies and deceit (sometimes spread through the media). However, we are not unarmed soldiers. We have the sword of the spirit as our weapon. 

The verses Ephesians 6:10-17 conclude with taking on the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit which is the word of God. The word is indeed a sword and what do you do with a sword? You attack and you defend. But just like any weapon if it is not wielded by the warrior it is ineffective in his hands. So how do we wield this sword of the spirit?

Wielding the sword of the spirit is what you probably know already. Use it! But how can you use something you don’t have? So we need to know the word. Hear the word. Read the word. Meditate on it. Eat it! 

Did you know fear and discouragement are not of God but an attack of the enemy? In times of fear, sadness, anxiety, and discouragement, defend yourself with the shield of faith: 

16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Ephesians 6:16

So remember what the word says and believe it, not your circumstance. Did He not say:

28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. Romans 8:28

Beloved the sword of the spirit is also used to attack. When we speak the word over challenges, and speak the truth of the Gospel in love to unbelievers, souls can be rescued from the grip of Satan and eternal damnation. 

In the temptations of Jesus Christ after the 40-day fast, we see how Jesus used the sword of the spirit to fight off Satan. By saying “It is written”. In that passage, we see even when the Devil tried to use “it is written”; Jesus still used “It is written”. So it is not enough to have shallow ideas of the word you have to know it well and go deeper to avoid being misled by those who twist the scriptures to deceive.

Comrade, you are stronger than you think because Christ lives in you. But we have to wield our sword which is to study, meditate on the word of God, and share the word because the more you teach others the more understanding you receive be it the word or any knowledge. And lastly: 

 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people. Ephesians 6:18

Let’s pray that God will help us to be given to the study of the word of God and that we shall remember it as we pray in the Spirit.
