After God breathed into Adam that was formed, the Bible recorded that he became a living soul (Gen. 2:7). The phrase “living soul” suggests that though the first man had a spirit, a soul, and a body, the personality of the first man was determined by the state of his soul. Now, the soul is the seat place of the “mind, the will, and the emotions“.

After man partook of the fruit he was forbidden to eat, the soul of a man was captured by the enemy (it became subjected to the devil). Man was then ruled by Sin, as he was his slave (John 8:34). The nature of Sin’s rule was that he influenced Man’s actions (will) through his emotions and mind. When Sin wants Man to act in accordance with his will, he makes man feel or think in a certain way. Though in the natural, Man thinks he is the one making the decisions, he is being influenced by sin in the spirit. At new birth, the spirit of man is saved instantly, but the salvation of the soul is continuous (James 1:21, Rom. 12:1-2), and the body will be saved at the return of Christ (1 Cor. 15:53).

Now, sin still has access to the soul of the new man whose mind is not renewed, and it is his desire to still rule or influence our actions. For this reason, the Lord has given us His word (the scriptures), so that as we meditate on it, we will learn His ways and gain wisdom for living. It is this wisdom we use to judge if the thoughts we are thinking or the emotions we are feeling are of the Lord or not. So we don’t decide based on our emotions or natural thinking, but on the word.

Speaking of Jesus Christ, Prophet Isaiah said “โ€ญโ€ญButter and honey shall he eat, that he may know to refuse the evil and choose the good (Isaiah 7:15)”. When he said “butter and honey shall he eat”, he meant “he will be meditating on the word of God (Psalm 119:103, Rom. 10:9, Psalm 55:21)”. To gain the wisdom for living that would totally set you free from the rule of the enemy, you abide in the word by continuously meditating on and practicing the word. This was why Jesus said, “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free (John 8:32)“.

Prayer Point.

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s ask Him for grace to abide in His word.
