Title: Wisdom Four – You Are Snared With Your Words
Thou art snared with the words of thy mouth, thou art taken with the words of thy mouth.
– Proverbs 6:2 KJV
“I swear”, “I give you my word”, “I give you my word”, “I promise”. These are common phrases we often hear in our daily interactions with people. However, most of the people who give these promises end up not fulfilling them. It’s very sad that majority of people, including Christians are promise-breakers. What do we see in our courtrooms? Most of the Witnesses swear an oath with the Bible and follow up with a lie. As Christians, the word of God in the above scripture is telling us to be careful with our words, especially the promises we make to God and to our brothers. Let’s make sure we fulfill every promise we make to God, our beloved, Fiancé, Husband, Wife, Employer, Employee, Colleagues and Friends.
In Judges 11, there is this famous story about Jephthah, who was a Judge in Israel at that time. Jephthah made a vow to the Lord that, If God gives him victory over the Ammonites, he will give to the Lord whatever comes out of his house to meet him when he returns in triumph. He vowed to sacrifice it as a burnt offering to the Lord. Lo and behold, the Lord gave him victory over the Ammonites and unfortunately for him, his one and only daughter was the first person who came to welcome him. Since he had made a vow to the Lord, he had to obey it by sacrificing his daughter.
The story about Jephthah teaches us to be careful with the promises and vows we make to the Lord, and also tells us to fulfill them. The Bible calls those who don’t fulfill their promises or delay in fulfilling their promises to the Lord, fools (Eccl 5:4). Beloved in the Lord, I will advise you to refrain from making a lot of promises to God and others. Young man, please don’t go around and be promising marriage to multiple women! Young lady, please don’t go around and be accepting the proposal of different men! I believe one of the commonest vows to break nowadays is the marriage vows. We often see a man and a woman come before the Altar, exchange their marriage vows but after a few years, can’t commit to them and end up breaking their vows for one or two reasons. Divorce has become normal among the Christian-Community, but we are so quick to condemn sexual immorality.
Let’s also be careful of the promises or vows we make out of emotions. For example, the promises we make when someone is in need, when we desperately need something from the Lord and when the Lord has done something great for us. I remember when my father died, a lot of family-friends made promises out of emotions to take care of us, but we never heard from any of them. I believe majority of us have made promises out of emotions which we didn’t fulfill.
Beloved in the Lord, for our words to have power, we have to make sure to tell the truth all the time even if it will take us to the grave. Let’s be ready to accept any consequences that telling the truth may bring. Lies don’t go with Spirituality! The devil is called the father of all lies (John 8:44). I personally become afraid of you the moment I hear you lie because a liar is capable of doing anything bad.
As Christians, we should know that some level of holiness is also required in our walk with the Lord (1 Peter 1:15). Psalms 15 and Psalms 24 reveal the Lord’s special place called, “Holy Hill” and Bro. Daniel Peter also described it in his Call to Prayer titled, “How to Ascend”. Who can enter the Lord’s Holy Hill? One of the qualifications which was listed in the Chapters is “speaking the truth from sincere hearts” or “never tell lies.”
Beloved in the Lord, let’s be careful with the words, promises and vows we make to the Lord and to our brothers because we will be judged by them (Matthew 12:36-37). As we walk with the Lord, desiring to go deeper in Him and enter His Holy Hill, let’s therefore make sure to always tell the truth irrespective of the consequences.
Prayer Point:
Let’s thank God for the answers to prayers we have already received. Let’s ask for mercy over every unfulfilled promise or vows we have made to the Lord and to our brothers. Let’s also ask God to help all believers to speak the truth and also fulfill every promise or vow they make.
God bless you all.
