There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; 10 for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his. 11 Let us, therefore, make every effort to enter that rest, so that no one will perish by following their example of disobedience. Hebrew 4:9-11

Last week I started this topic of working from rest and we read that it is God’s will we work but not as unbelievers do; that is with desperation, with anxiety, stress and every other negative thing often associated with work. But rather we work from rest. In other words that we enter God’s rest and fight to remain there. Today I would like us to explore further how we can work from rest.

Reading from through Hebrews 3 and 4, we see that the generation of the Israelite that God took out of Egypt didn’t enter the promise land of Canaan but rather their children because God had declared in His anger ‘They shall never enter my rest.’. This was because of their disobedience stemming from their unbelief.  Saint Paul goes on in the Hebrews 3 and 4 to warn and encourage us to belief the word of God so that we can obey and therefore enter God’s rest which those Israelite had missed. In summary belief is the essential element to entering God’s rest. Genuine believes follows up with obedience and this leads us into the rest of God. Take note at this point that obedience can mean different things per time and is not always equal to work; it can also mean do nothing.

Believe the word. Believe that God is good, merciful, kind, faithful, just, etc. The apostles witnessed Jesus’s life at first hand and with their own testimonies and being filled with holy spirit they continued to write God’s promises which is the word of God like Romans 8:28 “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose”, 1 Peter 5:7 “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” and James 1:2-4 “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters,[a] whenever you face trials of many kinds, 3 because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. 4 Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”, just to name a few.

So, when we believe the word, we will trust and obey, and this ushers us into God’s rest. For instance, instead of remaining in sin when we fall, we will repent and return to His throne of Grace (Hebrews 4:14-16).

Prayer Point:

Let’s thank God for His word today. We pray for the grace to believe God’s word so that we can enter His rest from where we can work without stress.
