“Now return the manโ€™s wife, for he is a prophet, and he will pray for you and you will live. But if you do not return her, you may be sure that you and all who belong to you will die.”
Genesis 20:7 (NIV)

Yesterday, I shared that every believer is a prophetโ€”not because all are called into the office of a Prophet, but because we all carry the Spirit of God, especially when baptized in the Holy Ghost. This is the fulfillment of Godโ€™s desire expressed through Moses in Numbers 11:29:

โ€œI wish that all the Lordโ€™s people were prophets and that the Lord would put his Spirit on them!โ€ (NIV)

Today, let us understand the difference between the office of a Prophet and the function of a Prophet.

Some are called into the office of a Prophet, yet their primary function is not prophecy. In Genesis 20, when God introduced Abraham to Abimelek as a prophet, He didnโ€™t send Abraham to deliver a prophetic word, but to intercede in prayer for healing. Though Abraham was a prophet, his function was primarily “faith”.

When Jesus was recognized as โ€œthe Prophet who is to come into the worldโ€ (John 6:14), it was not because of a prophetic utterance, but because of the miracles He performed:

“After the people saw the sign Jesus performed, they began to say, ‘Surely this is the Prophet who is to come into the world.’”
โ€” John 6:14 (NIV)

Similarly, David was a prophet, yet his prophetic grace was expressed through music and governance, not personal prophecy. His psalms spoke of events and the Messiah long before their fulfillment. Even though David may not have given people personal prophetic words, his insight into the future surpassed even that of Elijah. As Scripture says:

โ€œThe testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.โ€
โ€” Revelation 19:10 (KJV)

From these examples, we learn that it is possible to occupy the office of a prophet but function differentlyโ€”through teaching, music, intercession, miracles, or leadership. The gift of prophecy isnโ€™t limited to verbal messages. It often takes various forms, all carrying divine messages to those with discernment.

So, be assured of your calling. Believe what God has told you, even if your expression of prophetic grace differs from others.

Prayer Points:

  1. Letโ€™s thank God for His Word today.
  2. Letโ€™s ask Him to help us walk confidently in the calling He has given us.
