Have you ever heard a Christian say, “I don’t hear the voice of God”? This is usually the response of people who, although they are Christians, are not very prophetic. With this mindset, such people are not in expectation of hearing Him speak and therefore tend to make decisions purely cerebrally. It is God’s will that these people are helped.
God speaks to His children—every one of us. This is what He meant when He said, “My sheep listen to my voice” (John 10:27, NIV). As long as you are God’s sheep, He speaks to you. However, God does not always speak in an audible voice or through visions, nor does He speak in the same way to everyone—yet, He still speaks.
For those whom God has called into the prophetic ministry, they may see visions and hear God’s audible voice more frequently. However, God’s ways of speaking are not limited to these experiences.
The primary way God speaks to His children is through His Word. When you read the Scriptures and receive new light and understanding, that is God speaking to you. Likewise, each time you hear the Gospel preached, you are hearing the voice of God, because through that message, He is communicating with you.
Have you ever lost your peace about an issue? That is one of the ways God speaks. Many times, God withdraws His peace to let you know that what you are about to do is not His will. God can also speak through a deep sense of knowing in your spirit—you simply know that this is what God wants you to do, even though you did not see a vision or hear an audible voice.
From what we have discussed above, we can see that God speaks in diverse ways. Therefore, do not think you do not hear the voice of God simply because He does not speak to you in the same way He speaks to your neighbour.
