And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all…. For by one sacrifice, He has made perfect forever those who are being made holy. ย  Hebrews 10:10,14.
All things have been given to us in Christ Jesus ( 2 Peter 1:3, Rom. 8:32, Eph. 1:3), and this includes the forgiveness of sins. When Jesus Christ was on the cross of Calvary, all the sins of humanity – past, present, and future sins for everyone – were placed on Jesus. Therefore, even before we sin, God has forgiveness for us. However, this is not an encouragement for us to continue in sin, but for us to have the faith to receive His forgiveness when we fall short.
When God showed His glory to Moses, He declared of Himself “…the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion, and sin (Exodus 34:6-7)”. This suggests that the ability to forgive is the glory of God. If sin did not exist, this glory of God would not be seen. So when we sin, we should be assured that He will forgive us when we ask in a sincere manner, for in this, He is glorified (1 John 1:9).
The difference between Judas and Peter was that Peter was able to receive the forgiveness of God when he denied Jesus three times, but Judas was not, even though he showed remorse for his sin of betraying Jesus. He would have received forgiveness if he came to Him, but he lacked the faith to receive the forgiveness of God. Like Judas, many Christians are unable to receive God’s forgiveness because they lack knowledge of Him.
Some years ago, a close friend of mine fell into the sin of fornication. After the act, he felt convicted of his sins and spent many nights praying for long hours, asking God for forgiveness. On one of those nights, he heard the voice of God telling him, “I have (already) forgiven your past, present, and future sins.”
When the Lord told him this, He was not affirming him for committing fornication (obviously), but He was helping him to receive the forgiveness He had already given him. The reason my friend went several days asking for forgiveness was that he was not assured that God had forgiven him the moment he asked the first time. A righteous man is not one who does not fall into sin, but one who has the faith to get up when he falls, for the scripture says, “For though the righteous fall seven times, they rise again, but the wicked stumble when calamity strikes” (Proverbs 24:16 NIV).
Knowing that God forgives sins will help you to forgive those who offend you, for seeing the love of God helps you to manifest His love.
