Then he said to Him, โ€œIf now I have found favour in Your sight, then show me a sign that it is You who talk with me.โ€
Judges 6:17 (NKJV)

Gideon, who was described as a mighty man of valour by God Himself (Judges 6:12), is often misunderstood by Christians as fearful. This is because he was in hiding while threshing wheat in the winepress because of the Midianites (Judges 6:11), and he also set fleeces to test the voice of God (Judges 6:36โ€“40). Despite this, Gideon was a great man of faith, and his faith is one God wants us to imitate.

The story of Gideon began when Israel was being oppressed by the Midianites, who came up with the Amalekites and the people of the East during harvest seasons (Judges 6:3โ€“4). Usually, because of the threat to their lives, the Israelites abandoned their harvest and stayed indoors. It was in these circumstances that Gideon was found threshing wheat during harvest. Though he was in hiding, the very fact that he was out threshing wheat was a demonstration of courage. Courage is not the absence of fear, as many assume, but doing something despite fear. Courage is something God wants us to imitate.

Again, when Gideon set the fleeces, many assume this was a result of a lack of faith, but this is far from the truth. Israel as a nation had fallen into idol worship, which was why God allowed the Midianites to attack them (Judges 6:1โ€“2, 10). As a result of these idols, there were demonic activities in the land. For someone who was suddenly activated in the Spirit and began hearing voices and seeing visions, Gideon wanted to be sure that it was God he was hearing and not a demon pretending to be an angel of light.

The fleeces he set were meant to test the source of the words he was hearing. If they were truly coming from the Almighty, then the miraculous signs he demanded would not be difficult for God to perform. This is similar to what Peter did when he saw Jesus walking on water. To be sure it was truly Jesus, he requested that He command him to walk on water too (Matthew 14:28โ€“29). After Gideon confirmed it was God speaking, there was no further mention of him giving additional tests.

Scripture admonishes us to test all spirits (1 John 4:1), and this was what Gideon was doing. Though we may not set fleeces today, God expects us to examine what we hear to confirm whether it is coming from Him. This makes it both an act of faith and an application of wisdom.

From the story of Gideon, who was called a mighty man of valour by God, we can learn to trust the verdict of God, even when it is not immediately obvious.

Prayer Points
