Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.
Hebrews 10:38 (KJV)
When the Israelites were delivered from Egypt, there was a time in the wilderness when they began craving the food they used to eat in Egypt. Though physically they were with Moses, in their hearts they returned to Egypt. As a result, that generation died in the wilderness without seeing the Promised Land.
Like the Israelites, many Christians have turned back from following Jesus. In their hearts, they desire the days of their bondage because of the pleasure of sin. Like the Israelites, such people cannot make it to the Kingdom of God. In the same way the Israelites did not consider that they were in chains when they ate those foods in Egypt, Christians who crave the pleasure of sin do not realise that sin itself is bondage.
Instead of looking back, the Scriptures admonish us to look forward to the coming of Jesus. While looking back takes us into bondage, looking forward to His coming purifies us, even as He is pure (1 John 3:3). The grace to endure present contradictions comes from focusing on the glory ahead (Hebrews 12:2).
Looking forward to His return helps you to persevere in doing good, because you know that your works will be rewarded at His coming (Revelation 22:12). Looking forward also gives you the foresight to properly align yourself with Him.
Look to the coming of Jesus and do not be discouraged by the present situation.
