Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign, ……. [2] And he did that which was right in the sight of the LORD, and walked in all the way of David his father, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left. (2 Kings 22:1-2 KJV)

Every child of God carries a royal DNA which is engrafted at new birth. In our opening text, we see a young king who started reigning at eight years old. He was being compared to King David in the way he ordered the kingdom under him. We will therefore be looking at a few of the characteristics that David possessed as a young man.

As a believer with a royal identity, we must be bold and courageous to rule in life. David wasn’t faking it when he went up to battle with Goliath. He was too sure he was going to be victorious. Lack of courage can be seen by the enemy as being fearful, and this quickly paints a picture of a predator-prey scenario, and whenever the predator smells fear, he attacks. Being strong and courageous is not negotiable. It is a major requirement to rule over life’s circumstances. When Joshua was to start leading the Lord’s people in the wilderness into the promised land, God told him several times to be strong and be very courageous.

David was a shepherd. The shepherd is a watchman, a very good listener and one who pays keen attention to detail. Even though the sheep might be making the same sound, he could tell what the sheep needed per time by the slightest variation of the bleat. As kingdom royalty, we must make watching and praying a lifestyle because a lot of souls have been committed to us, and we cannot afford to lose them to the enemy. So, before danger even comes close, we must have seen it afar off because we are constantly on the watchtower interceding and defending the lives under our care, including our own. A good shepherd will never allow the enemy to walk in and take what is under his care without a fight.

David was responsible. As a believer with a royal identity. We must be a responsible member of God’s household. One that he can trust with his assignments and instructions. We must also be responsible in our homes, not neglecting our duties to others to carry. We must constantly be in touch with heaven for divine wisdom to fulfil daily tasks. Daniel was highly responsible in successive governments in Babylon, and he could be depended upon. So much so that his being responsible saved his life and the lives of every wise man, astrologers and magicians in the land when the king was angry and threatened to kill them because they could not tell his forgotten dream and interpret it. Being responsible increases your reach, like the servant who got five more talents; his master made him ruler over ten cities.

David was a lover of God and an exceptional leader. Our love for God must be non-negotiable and unwavering. It was his love for God that translated into his love for God’s people. As a leader, we are selfless, and we represent a kingdom that is above here on earth. The task of leading people is enormous, and we need to be guided constantly by the Holy Spirit to fulfil that duty without errors and regrets. David, as king, became an icon and the commander-in-chief of the Armed forces. He led by showing worthy examples. The life we live is a testament to the people that we are leading. They read us more than the word of God we preach.

Finally, our royal identity cannot be fully exhausted in this devotional, but we must strive to be a good representative of Godโ€™s royal household at all times.

Prayer point:

Let’s thank God for His word today. Let’s pray that God should not allow us to lose our royal identity in Him.
