5 We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. 2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV
Our minds are like an open playground. So many thoughts cross our minds. Some good and some bad. So our own thoughts can be God speaking to us, as well as it can be the Devil speaking. This calls for discernment.
When the Devil is tempting you in your thoughts, he does introduce himself, saying something like “Oh, servant of God, I am the devil, this is me speaking now, follow this evil path…” No, most often we don’t see the devil; we just have that subtle idea to do something to satisfy our flesh that is contrary to what the Spirit desires. So again, this calls for vigilance.
8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 1 Peter 5:8
Knowing that God speaks to us even through our own thoughts is an encouragement for those wondering how God speaks to them. Jesus said, “27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:”(John 10:27). He also said his sheep do not follow the voice of a stranger, but flee from him (John 10:5). It means so long as you are Jesus’s sheep, be rest assured that you hear His voice. But this does not mean you won’t also hear the voice of the stranger(the Devil); however, you are to discern that it is not the Lord and not follow.
The devil is also described as a serpent, which represents wisdom. That means the Devil is cunning or crafty. He could speak thoughts like; Just a little bit. Just this one time. Or even tangible reasons why one should act wrongly.
However, as we stay grounded in the word of God and prayer, we can recognise and overcome every cunning scheme of the enemy to lead us out of God’s righteous path for us.
At times, evil ideas are not from your own mind but someone speaking what may look good at the surface level, but in depth is contrary to the will of God.
22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. “Never, Lord!” he said. “This shall never happen to you!” 23 Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me; you do not have in mind the concerns of God, but merely human concerns.” Matthew 16:22-23
In conclusion, as St Paul says in the opening verse, we are to take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
Prayer Point:
- Let’s thank God for His word.
- Let’s pray that God will help us judge every one of our thoughts to know which one is from Him and which is contrary to His will.
- Let’s pray God will help us live in prayer so that we are empowered to overcome temptations at all times.
