The call to be a disciple of Jesus is a call to self-discipline. Jesus said to his disciples,

“…Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it. “(Matthew 16:24-25)

Jesus said, “deny themselves”. Self-discipline is self-denial. The benefits of self-discipline cut across all spheres of life. However, as believers, we are not called to practice self-discipline only when it has to do with achieving material success, as many unbelievers also practice. Our self-discipline is beyond gaining wealth or fame; it is to gain the crown of glory, eternal life (1 Peter 5:4, Romans 2:7). 

As believers, we resist temptations. We flee from temptations. We subject the flesh to the will of the Spirit. All these are constant practices. The Spirit must rule and not the flesh. 

However, it is easier said than done. Therefore, Jesus said

“Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Matthew 26:41

Self-discipline is not a trophy nor a one-time accomplishment. It is cultivated, and it is sustained. Before temptation comes, you must have been prepared; if not, you will likely fall. It is like the student who tries to cover the syllabus the night before the exams. Rather, you should have been preparing regularly. 

There are habits that build and maintain self-discipline. Such habits as you probably know already are regular prayers, bible studies, fasting, alms giving and even regular exercise. 

The bible records Jesus’s early morning prayer life long before we went up to the cross. (Mark 1:35). Without self-discipline, you cannot be a disciple of Jesus. However, it comes through grace, which is obtained in prayer. 

Prayer Point: 

• Let’s thank God for the word today. 
• Let’s pray that God will help us to desire to please Him even when it requires denying ourselves. 
• Let’s pray for the grace to practice the habits that build and sustain self-discipline.
