โ€œBut King Solomon loved many strange women, together with the daughter of Pharaohโ€”women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Zidonians, and Hittites.โ€
1 Kings 11:1 (KJV

Solomon is one of the most interesting characters in Scripture. His life showed how far God can go in blessing someone. He was endowed with wisdom above all in his time, and his wealth and fame were unmatched in his days.

However, Solomon had a bad ending. Scripture records that his heart was turned away from following God because of his wives (1 Kings 11:4). This change at the end was not because he lacked knowledge of the ways of God. The fact that he authored three books in the Bible affirms this. Rather, the change Solomon experienced was because the love he had for many strange women (1 Kings 11:1) became greater than the love he initially had for God (1 Kings 3:3).

Our love for God is seen in our obedience to Him. This is why Jesus Christ said, โ€œIf you love Me, keep My commandmentsโ€ (John 14:15). Since Solomon chose to follow the gods of his wives at the end, it showed that his love for the women had become greater than his love for God. The question now is: why did this happen?

While reading the Bible some days ago, I came across Deuteronomy 17:14โ€“20, where the Lord gave instructions on how the kings of Israel should behave. This included the command that a king should not โ€œmultiply wives for himself, lest his heart turn away; nor shall he greatly multiply silver and gold for himselfโ€ (Deuteronomy 17:17, NKJV).

Beyond these instructions, God also provided a means by which they could ensure continued obedience. He said:
โ€œAlso it shall be, when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write for himself a copy of this law in a book, from the one before the priests, the Levites. And it shall be with him, and he shall read it all the days of his life, that he may learn to fear the Lord his God and be careful to observe all the words of this law and these statutesโ€ (Deuteronomy 17:18โ€“19, NKJV).

From the above, we see that daily meditation on the Word of God is a means ordained by God to keep our love and fear of Him alive. Clearly, based on what is written in Deuteronomy 17:14โ€“20, Solomon did not remain consistent in this practice, which contributed to his downfall.

As kings and priests of God, we should learn from the life of Solomon and be diligent in meditating on the Word. By this, He preserves us in Himself. Jesus is saying to you, โ€œAbide in Meโ€ (John 15:4).

Prayer Points

Let us thank God for His Word today. Let us ask Him to help us abide in Him by continually meditating on His Word.
