Title: The danger of past glory

Remember ye not the former things, neither consider the things of old. [19] Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.(Isaiah 43:18-19 KJV)

When past achievements become our source of identity and confidence, we begin to create the possibility of drifting into spiritual stagnation. What God did before was significant, but it was never meant to be the final chapter. Depending on past glory is allowing yesterdayโ€™s victories to replace todayโ€™s dependence on God.

There is nothing wrong with remembering past victories because testimonies strengthen faith, and recounting Godโ€™s faithfulness can inspire both ourselves and others. Davidโ€™s recounting of how he killed the lion and the bear was appropriate (1 Sam. 17:34-37). It demonstrated confidence in Godโ€™s power. However, there is a subtle and dangerous line between remembering past glory and living in it.

Achievements of the past have the capacity to birth pride and complacency. Dwelling on past achievements blinds us from seeing what is ahead. The Apostle Paul, despite his incredible accomplishments, declared, โ€œForgetting those things which are behindโ€ฆ I press toward the goalโ€ (Phil. 3:13-14). He refused to let past success limit future pursuits.

The anointing that sustained you yesterday may not be sufficient for todayโ€™s assignment if you are no longer walking in obedience and intimacy with God. Godโ€™s faithfulness in the past should fuel your faith for the future, not replace it. Let your testimony be a foundation, not a resting place. Stay hungry, stay dependent and stay expectant for the next thing on God’s agenda for your life.

Prayer point:

  • Let us thank God for His word today, and for every victory and testimony He has given us.
  • Let’s pray for grace to seek Him daily and not live on yesterday’s glory.
