Title: The Power of Observation

I applied my heart to what I observed and learned a lesson from what I saw: (Proverbs 24:32 NIV)
Knowledge, wisdom, and understanding are precipitates of observation and meditation. Whilst observation is through the physical senses, meditation is observation coupled with thinking on a subject through the mind. This is why children learn more from looking at examples of what you do and often behave the same way. Human beings are naturally shaped by what they consistently see, hear, and focus on. God designed life in such a way that lessons are hidden in everyday experiences for those willing to pay attention.
King Solomon did not only learn wisdom by merely hearing sermons or reading books, but he also learned by carefully observing life and meditating on different subject matters. In the verses before Proverbs 24:32, the king described the field of a lazy man overgrown with thorns and broken walls. By observing the condition of that field, he learned valuable lessons about diligence, discipline, and responsibility. Observation became a teacher. Jesus Himself often taught through observation. He said, โLook at the birds of the airโ and โSee how the flowers of the field growโ (Matthew 6:26-28). That is our Lord and saviour pointing believers to observe God’s power and wisdom in creation. Many times, God speaks through what we see around us, if only we slow down enough to notice and pick up the lessons.
The power of observation also shapes character. What you consistently watch, admire, and meditate on will eventually influence your thoughts and actions. David understood this when he declared, โI will set before my eyes no vile thingโ (Psalm 101:3). Careless observation can corrupt the heart, while godly observation can inspire transformation. This is why believers must guard their eyes, ears, and minds carefully.
Finally, observation without meditation is limited, but observation combined with meditation produces wisdom. Mary, the mother of Jesus, demonstrated this beautifully when she โtreasured up all these things and pondered them in her heartโ (Luke 2:19). She reflected deeply on what she had seen God doing, and through meditation came understanding. The Holy Spirit can use what you see to teach, correct, and guide you into wisdom. We must ask God to sharpen our spiritual perception because there are divine lessons hidden in ordinary moments.
Prayer point:
- Let us thank God for His word today.
- Let’s ask the Lord to help us observe life carefully and meditate on His word daily.
Father, please open my eyes to the lessons You place around me and grant me wisdom to apply them correctly.
