4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ” Matthew 4:3-4

As a teenager growing up, I observed with amazement how some people attended the morning mass daily (a morning mass is a short morning church service held in some Catholic parishes, usually daily). I wondered what the need was for one to attend a church service daily. Now, I know better. 

Spiritual nourishment is very similar to our physical nourishment. Every day we eat food; at least if you can have it. Every day, we take a bath to remain clean. The body needs food to develop and also to maintain itself. Without food stored up as energy and resources in your body, you cannot work. 

Similarly, our spirit man longs for the word of God just as Jesus states in our opening verses. The Bible teaches us that the word of God builds up our faith, which is spiritual growth (Romans 10: 17, Acts 20:32). By the word of God, we are sustained in our spiritual walk with God (John 6:61, John 15:7).  Still, the word of God washes us clean like we wash our bodies in bathing (John 15:3, Ephesians 5:26). 

We need food to live physically. We need the word of God to live spiritually. Life without Christ is spiritual death, and a Christian who is not receiving the word regularly will not last long in the faith. That’s almost guaranteed!

Therefore, let’s not despise the word of God. Even if you have heard it before, you still need to hear it again and again. The world constantly preaches to us its falsehoods. Without constantly hearing the word of God, we would soon start to believe the world and lose our faith. 

Prayer Point

• Let’s thank God for His word today.
• Let’s thank God for the various means we have access to hear the word of God. 
• Let’s pray that God will help us know the importance of hearing His word often.
