Purpose is the inherent use for which a thing was created. It is the reason behind existence — the function a thing was designed to fulfil. When properly understood, purpose becomes a force, a compass that drives our decisions, shapes the organisation of our lives, and directs our steps.

Mark 1:12

Man’s primary purpose is to please God, and to please God is to do His will. This will is expressed differently through each individual’s calling — whether as a lawyer, a doctor, an engineer, or a mother — for whatever we are called to do becomes the vessel through which we fulfil God’s purpose on the earth.

We see this illustrated in the life of Christ. When Jesus healed on the Sabbath and was questioned for it, He justified His action by declaring that He did only what He saw the Father doing John 5:19

This reveals a vital truth: the healing and deliverance we have received are not ends in themselves. God heals and delivers us so that we might fulfil a specific function — as individuals, institutions, and societies.

“And they shall build the old wastes, they shall raise up the former desolations, and they shall repair the waste cities, the desolations of many generations.”
— Isaiah 61:4 (KJV)

We are called to deliver the earth and to deliver others, through the very means God has given us. Only a vessel that fulfils God’s purpose pleases Him; the moment a vessel can no longer fulfil its purpose, it is discarded.

Our advantage as believers is this: the Spirit of God, received at baptism, always knows the purposes of God and is able to please Him at all times. This same Spirit was at work in Jesus, leading Him into all truth and empowering Him for every assignment. Yet as individuals, our spirit may be weak, and so it must be strengthened. The Apostle Paul teaches that praying in tongues builds up the spirit 1 Corinthians 14:4 (KJV)

And before any believer can fully receive their inheritance in Christ, this building up is necessary Acts 20:32

Prayer Points

1. Thank God for revealing your purpose and for the Spirit that empowers you to fulfil it.
2. Ask the Lord to strengthen your spirit through prayer, that you may remain a vessel fit for His use.
3. Pray for grace to build the old wastes, raise desolations, and deliver others through the assignment God has given you.
